Flumserei, Flums
In 1866, the first machines for the production of high-quality yarn were put into operation at the Flumserei. The history of the former spinning mill of the entrepreneurial Spoerry family is characterised by around 150 years of innovative spirit and drive. After many ups and downs, the spinning mill is now being converted into a place of work, production and living. The large, empty factory building is to be revitalised with a good mix of apartments and uses.
The project includes 106 apartments on the upper floors and commercial units on the ground floor. The scheme also includes a new landscaped perimeter including a new car park beneath the attractive forecourt.
The 7 storey, 100 metre long hall building is a listed building. In consultation with the heritage authorities, the original project was developed into a timber-only structure with existing cast iron columns set in concrete and new concrete slabs. In future, the new timber construction as a glulam system will provide all the structural support, including the replacement of the cast iron columns with timber columns. This will make a significant contribution to the environment and significantly reduce grey energy emissions.
